About Me

Thanks for visiting Lane Changes. I'm in the process of evolving this site from a pen and paper enthusiast blog to something more general. So if things seem a bit weird right now, that's why.

Now that we have that out of the way, hi, I'm Doug Lane. I spend my days in the depths of enterprise software, but I've discovered that pens, paper, and other analog tools are the best way to keep my head screwed on straight both at work and at home.

I've benefitted greatly from the many pen and paper enthusiasts who share their passion and knowledge online, so this site is my effort to pay it forward.

I live in the SouthCoast region of Massachusetts (basically, the coastline between Cape Cod and the Rhode Island border) with my wife and two sons.

Please feel free to say a quick hello on Twitter (@dlane) or through the contact page here on the site. Or better yet, you can reach me the old fashioned way at:

I always enjoy meeting fellow writing enthusiasts who find their way here.

Behind the Scenes

Modern Stationer is hosted by the fine folks at Squarespace.

Big picture brainstorming and planning happens in a Baron Fig journal (dot grid) using an adapted version of the Bullet Journal system.

I use fountain pens about 98 percent of the time. My "daily driver" is a Pilot Vanishing Point (medium, black-plated nib) in gunmetal with black matte accents.

When it's time to work in 1s and 0s, I use a mid-2013 11-inch MacBook Air with an iPad Pro (the big one) and an iPhone 7 Plus playing supporting roles. I use Byword for most of my computer-based writing.

Most of my photographs are taken using a Panasonic LUMIX GX7 with a Panasonic / Leica G 25mm f/1.4 prime lens.
