I tore through Shallow Graves: The Hunt for the New Bedford Highway Serial Killer in two days, which is fast for me. It goes deep on a local-to-me murder investigation that I followed as a teenager. The author did a great job of humanizing the victims in a way that I haven’t seen in previous coverage. Also, while many in the area, including me, look back on the failed prosecutorial efforts in the 80s and early 90s as a circus, I came away with a newfound respect for local law enforcement’s role in the investigation. Revisiting a dark time in New Bedford’s history also gave me an even greater appreciation for how much the city has changed for the positive in my lifetime. 👍
