Years ago, a volunteer at our local children’s hospital signaled a patient with his bicycle light to say goodnight on the way home. To his surprise, the patient signaled back by flickering the lights in his room.
This simple exchange turned into something bigger. Now, every night at 8:30 p.m., everyone from police offers to nightclub patrons to families with flashlights send signals of support.
Last night, the young patients received a signal from the furthest distance yet: space.
This local tradition always reminds me that even very small gestures of kindness can make a big difference.
